The Detroit Beer Company

DBC is my spot. I think they have some of the best beers around and usually have a pretty decent crowd. They are located on Broadway in close proximity to Comerica Park and Ford Field. DBC is a terrific place to before or after the games or if need be watch the game on one of their big screen TVs. Good lunch and dinner menu as well.

"Made in Detroit"

I just finished the book "Made in Detroit" by Paul Clemens. Although I am a little bias because the book sort of parallels my childhood in Detroit, I still think it is a great read for anyone intersted in a unique perspective of Detroit. The author dabbles in the history of the city and tries to understand how it ended up in the state it is in. The unintentionally comedic, ignorant quotes of ex-Mayor Coleman Young are almost woth the price of the book alone.

Detroit's New Budget Proposal

Kwame has released his budget proposal for next year. Highlights include charging $25 a month for trash pickup and if I am reading this correctly, and I am hope I am not, I think he wants to charge handicap people $.75 to ride the SMART bus. Check out the article.

The Well

The Well has a great setup. It is seated directly on Broadway where it meets Gratiot. The bar itself is fairly large and wide open. A couple years back it won the Metro Times award for best place to have last call. The clientele is probably mid to late 20's up to mid 30's. Good beer selection and plenty of people coming in and out.

Mexican Town

I definitely feel like I don't take advantage of Mexican Town enough. Mexican Town is located around the block from the Ambassador Bridge and has wonderful, traditional, rather inexpensive food. Just about any night of the week you can find people hanging out on the streets or visiting the Mexican bakeries. Great place to spend a summer week night. Cinco de Mayo in Mexican Town is one of the most fun days of the year.

Old Shillelagh

If you are a visitor to Detroit you owe it to yourself to check this place out. On most nights you can go upstairs to sit at wood tables, sing and dance to real Irish music while drinking good, quality Irish ale. Better get there early, it can fill up.

Restaurant: Niki's pizza

Arguably the best deep dish pizza in Detroit. Located on Beaubien St. about a block away from the Greektown Casino. Large pizza and a pitcher of beer would cost you right around $20. Not a bad place for a cheap date. It has a nice atmosphere and a small patio if you want to sit outside in the summer.

Casinos: Greektown casino

Greektown Casino is my favorite casino in Detroit. The location is the best because of the ample amount of bars and restaurants in walking distance. Sometimes difficult to find a blackjack table because of the large variety of table games available. Most times you can find a $15 blackjack table as long as you are not there during peak hours. During peak hours the cheapest tables you will find are $25. The crowd is very diverse and just about impossible to describe. You will find 21 year olds drinking their legal beers to 100 year old slot players who have been there 15 hours straight.

Bar: Detroiter Bar

The Detroiter is located on Beaubien St down the block from Greektown Casino and next door to
Beaubien St bar. The bar has a great atmosphere but beers are a bit pricey not crazy though. It's a good place to meet friends and shoot pool or play darts. Always seems to be busy especially around Happy Hour. Tends to have a crowd that consists of 30-somethings that work downtown.

Bar: Beaubien St. Bar

Located on Beaubien St. near Greektown casino next to the Detroiter Bar. Possibly one of the best drinking bars in the city. Nothing fancy just pool tables, darts, cheaper beers, and decent TVs to watch the games. I think it might be a bigtime Red Wings bar.

Bar: Anchor bar

Anchor Bar is located on Congress St. across from Joe Louis Arena the home of the Detroit Red Wings It is widely known around Detroit as a hot spot before and after Red Wings games. The burgers are good and the staff is young and energetic which gives the bar a more of a party attitude. The place gets crazy after hockey games so if you are looking to get drunk and dance stop in after a Red Wing victory.

Bar: Coaches Corner

Located on Centre St close to Comerica Park and Ford Field. Great place to hang out before and after the game. Good crowd with attractive wait staff. I think it might get a little clubby on weekend nights. Regardless, a good place to hang out for the night or just meet for a few pre-game brews.
